Having since let go of her day job and showing at national and international trade shows, MacDonald’s whimsical treasures are now carried in over 225 retail boutiques, including a place of her own.įormerly housing the venerable Newfoundland Store, the building Halifax Paper Hearts currently occupies has existed for over a century. Subsequently appearing at Halifax Seaport Market, the brand was picked up by its first retailer before year-end and 150 more within two and a half years. Pouring her heart into it and teaching herself graphic design skills, MacDonald’s Halifax Paper Hearts (HPH) sold its first card in August 2015. Returning to Halifax, MacDonald, a marketing director in commercial real estate at the time, came home motivated to pursue her new calling. With a design of two old women on the card’s cover, it was contemporary and apropos, on top of being cute and quirky. Taking matters into her own hands, MacDonald created her first card with a simple and loving proposition, “Let’s Grow Old Together,” inspired by the love story of her aunt and her wife. “After visiting a few large department stores, we were only able to find cards featuring champagne glasses, wedding cakes and bride and groom illustrations on them,” says MacDonald, noting none of the cards held significance for the same-sex union she had travelled so far to celebrate. In 2014, Halifax Paper Hearts founder Stefanie MacDonald found herself in a predicament: she was attending her aunt’s wedding in Calgary but couldn’t find a suitable greeting card for the occasion – and time was running out. So when following your heart imparts goodwill, charity and a cute product, you better believe it’s worthwhile. Sharing your inspirations, passions, and talents to uplift, support and provide a sense of sanguinity is crucial. Doing what you love and sharing it is what truly matters, especially now. ![]()
